File Formats
.AI – Adobe Illustrator File, is a vector-based file format where each element or object can be defined by mathematical statements and contain individual properities (i.e. – fill, color, and outline). This allows you to resize the image to fit any resolution without loss of quality.
.EPS – Encapsulated PostScript Format, a postscript format used to transfer a graphic image between various applcations and platforms. Another vector-based file format that allows for easy resizing.
.TIFF – Tagged Image File Format, is a widely supported bitmap file format compatible with most common paint, photo-editing, illustration, and page-layout applications. Often a recommended file type by print vendors.
CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, & Black. 4 Color Process which combined together in varying proportions can be made to produce the full colour spectrum.
Grayscale – a range of graytones between black and white. Used for black and white printing (i.e. – newspapers).
.PSD – Photoshop File Format. A pixel-based file format, native to Adobe Photoshop. Used to generate pixel-based formats like .jpeg or gif for web use. In pixel-based formats. Scaling or resizing becomes an issue. Attempts to enlarge the image beyond the default size/resolution will lower the quality.
GIF – Graphic Interchange Format. A common pixel-based file format used to display images on the web. A compressed format, designed to minimize the file transfer time. Allows for transparent backgrounds where the design will be displayed on any colored web background, omitting a boxed frame. Due to the nature of pixel-based images, edges may appear blurry when placed on a web page background. Attempts to enlarge the image may result in loss of quality.
JPEG – or jpg. Another common pixel-based file format. Best suited for photographic images. Attempts to enlarge the image may result in loss of quality.
BMP – A graphic image or raster graphic stored as a specific arrangement of screen dots, or pixels. Attempts to enlarge the image may result in loss of quality.
PDF – Portable Document Format. A universal file format that preserves the fonts, images, graphics, and layout of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it.
